How much instruction concerning cultural diversity should be permitted into the classroom? Should the public school act as a melding pot for immigrants? Should the American Public School system work to “Americanize” children of immigrants? Should public education be denied to children of illegal immigrants?
1. As much as possible, through games, electronic media, music, food and history.
2. Yes.
3. American culture should be taught in the same ways that any other culture is taught.
4. Yes, unless the parents plan to pay school taxes. I don't like the idea of children having to suffer for their parents' mistakes, but the public school system is strapped for cash to pay for most things as it is.
America needs to wake up and start teaching it's own children about other cultures. All I got when I was in elementary, middle and high school was America this and America that. Gods forbid any other peoples were mentioned, except briefly in history. Even then, in high school, I was in AP European History, so that's why. There was no philosophy, no education about world geography or foreign affairs, nothing. All that said, they also need to start teaching English grammar. The lack of it in public schools makes me sick. And I'm all in favour of English-only classrooms and also of ESL courses for children of immigrants. As for illegals, they and their children should all be sent back to their countries as soon as possible, unless they are willing to take a citizenship test, learn the language and work. I detest so-called latchkey kids, not the children themselves of course, but the fact that these people have children just to stay in the country. You came here illegally and having a child shouldn't change that.
I do agree. Schools should not just focus on one culture. Canadians learn not just aboat Canada, but all other cultures and that is how I believe it should be. Children are not prepared to enter the world nowadays eh?
This is however what happens when one nation holds itself above the others. I do not believe any one country is better than the other.
Is it that way in Canada too? I didn't know that. I know, in Europe, it's mostly different and the children are taught about all sorts of places and whatnot.
